From Career Change to Calling: Butler University’s Online Mental Health Counseling Program Transformed Shannon Cameron’s Future

Shannon Cameron

When layoffs struck Shannon Cameron’s health coaching career, she saw an opportunity rather than a setback. The Maryland native, now living in Greenwood, Indiana, had already been contemplating a career change following her son’s mental health journey and her recognition of the critical need for child counselors.

“I saw that there was a huge need in specifically child counselors,” Shannon explains. “When I was laid off, I saw that as a door opening for a new experience.”

Her search for the right degree led her to Butler University’s online Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling program, where she discovered not just academic excellence but a commitment to values that aligned with her vision for future practice.

Choosing Excellence and Inclusion

Shannon initially applied elsewhere, but when Butler launched its online master’s in mental health counseling option, everything changed. “Their classes are top of the line,” she says. “They’re known to produce good graduates. They have a name for themselves.”

In addition to their reputation, Butler’s positive stance on diversity and inclusion—values that resonate deeply with Shannon as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and mother of multiracial children—stood out to her. “Having training in multicultural sensitivity and cultural humility … is going to set you apart from others and have your clients feel accepted and safe in your space,” she notes. “As a counselor, to me, that’s huge.”

A foundation in cultural competency directly supports Shannon’s career goals of establishing a private practice focused on children ages six to 10 who have experienced trauma. She plans to incorporate pet therapy, art therapy, and music therapy approaches.

Academic Rigor Meets Real-World Application

The online mental health counseling degree program’s comprehensive curriculum quickly expanded Shannon’s understanding of mental well-being. “Going into it, I thought I knew about mental health, but there’s just so much more,” she reflects. Her favorite courses—psychopathology and trauma and crisis—provided both foundational knowledge and specialized training directly applicable to her career aspirations.

The hands-on learning component through a 100-hour practicum and 600-hour internship has been equally transformative. Shannon is currently completing her internship at a local stress center alongside eight classmates, gaining practical experience while building a professional network.

Online Learning for Working Professionals

As an interactive learner, Shannon was initially hesitant about online education. Butler’s faculty soon put her concerns to rest. “I’m a very hands-on learner, so going to an online platform, I was a bit nervous. But the faculty make themselves very accessible to the students.”

The program’s flexibility proved invaluable for managing family responsibilities. “The payoff is not having to deal with traffic or having a set schedule, so I can make it to all kinds of events,” she explains. “I was able to get one-on-one feedback and help from the instructor, which was amazing.”

The university’s comprehensive support system, including writing assistance and 24/7 IT help, ensured smooth navigation of the online environment. “I had a really good experience. I was hesitant being in an online program, but it’s been really smooth.”

Personal and Professional Transformation

Beyond academic achievement, the mental health counseling master’s program has changed Shannon’s worldview. “This program has really given me a deeper level of insight to consider the outside world with a non-judgmental lens,” she shares. This perspective shift extends beyond her future career into daily interactions, fostering greater patience and kindness in all relationships.

Working with children during her internship has confirmed her purpose. When describing students who initially resist therapy but leave tearfully because they’ll miss her, Shannon declares, “This is my calling. This is where I’m supposed to be.”

Through Butler’s program, Shannon was able to connect with people who were struggling and help them emerge from dark places. “I think this is the first [degree] that I’ve been passionate about,” she concludes. “I really do feel happy and proud of where I am and where I’m going.”
